This is the second generation Avatar II Robot. There were many challenges the ID had to overcome. The top surface is configurable with hard mounting points to hold different hardware, such as a PTZ camera or robotic arm. Blank covers, shown in front, can have loop pads adhered to the rectangular hook pockets so the Avatar II Robot can carry signage or tools. The RoboteX logo is recessed on the cover to promote its branding.
Responsibilities: Industrial Design.
Considerable ID effort was made to the front of the Avatar II Robot to portray a professional and non-threatening appearance.
Avatar II Controller
The main controls are in an arched configuration to provide access by sweeping the thumbs over them.
Three chrome-plated steel rods serve as a standoff if the Controller is dropped face down. They can be used as attachment hard points for straps or a sling. If the operator needs both hands, he can drop the Controller and connect it to him without worrying, and it will drop to the floor.
Several innovations were incorporated to improve the usability and comfort of the previous controller design.
Two back side curves hide two battery packs for the fingers to grip the Controller. This also helps to balance the weight so the Controller can be operated with one hand. The side curves extend the length of the controller, providing a smooth gripping surface while accessing the controls and interfacing with the touch screen.
Several colors were explored to represent different agencies, such as black for military or SWAT, red for fire departments, emergency-neon-green for rescue, and white for corporate security.
